Lifeguard Tower Schedule
Summer 2010

The Marina Park and Seaward lifeguard towers will be open fulltime starting Saturday, June 19.  the budget plan identified the late start to match up with the local schools and as a way to stretch our budget.  We similarly shift the hours to make the mosst of our budget.  Both towers will regularly start by 10 AM and regularly stay open until at least 5 PM.

NOTE:  The amount of time saved by opening late and closing early on slow days will be applied to increased coverage and hours when it is busy.

Update from City Hall on Sand
Carl Valdez - Street Maintenance -
April 30, 2010

I will have 4 workers moving sand today.  2 Equipment Operators and the 2 leadworkers will be assisting and overseeing the operation.

Bruce made an assessment of all of the Lanes and the Seaward Parking Lot yesterday afternoon.  About half of the streets will not need any moving.  One street actually had less than 2 shovels of sand on the street.

A few driveways were blocked, as well as a few roads that had excessive sand in spots.  Our task today is to send these guys out and push the sand to the end of the lanes, and that's it - no removal and hauling is necessary, nor will be done today.  The next scheduled removal day is May 13.

The Seaward Parking lot will be open today.  We will have sand pushed to a couple of the spots, and those spots will be barricaded.  The end of the street will not be cleared off unless traffic can not get around.

Since we are not hauling sand - it won't be considered a removal day, and the schedule will remain in tact.  This will be written off a "right of way cleaning day".

Anastasi Formal Design Review Committee Meeting Scheduled

City of Ventura Budget Meeting
Public invited

Dear Public Safety Supporter,

I am writing to you today to encourage you to attend an important budget meeting/workshop taking place this coming Saturday, March 6, 2010, from 10 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Poinsettia Pavilion located at 3451 Foothill Road.

The purpose of the workshop is to educate residents and community members about the fiscal challenges facing Ventura in the coming years. At this point, the projected loss in tax revenues indicate the City will need to further reduce general fund spending by more than $7 million for the Fiscal year 2010-2011. This pending reduction is in addition to the $11 million the City reduced in the current fiscal year budget.

As you may know, past budget reductions have resulted in program and service cuts to the police departments that includes personnel to oversee the Neighborhood Watch programs, police storefront operations, downtown foot patrol, and the reduction of seven sworn officer positions. The City now must prioritize further spending reductions that could likely reduce the number of sworn police officers and significantly impact our department’s ability to respond, investigate, and solve criminal activity in our community.

Our Council is conducting this workshop to hear input from community members like you in regards to what should be the funding priorities for the City. I am asking for your involvement in order to help provide a clear voice of support for the high prioritization of police services in our community. I firmly believe this meeting presents us with a unique opportunity to engage Councilmembers, City officials, and members of the community, and to lend our voices to the discussion that public safety staffing and services must remain a priority for this Council.

Please note, there is no need to RSVP, simply show up if you can make it. I look forward to seeing you on Saturday and to working with you.

Sincerely,

Ken Corney
Police Chief

Ventura’s Most Excellent Adventure Race To Join Kinetic Sculpture Race Day

This year's event will include Ventura's Most Excellent Adventure Race. The Adventure Race will start at 8 am with a mandatory pre-race meeting at 7:40 am. Registration is available online at www.active.com.. A wacky, twist of skills, mental challenges, surprises and fun all rolled up in one Race. The sport of Adventure Racing is sweeping the nation at a phenomenal rate. The new challenges presented to adventure racers have caused the sport to grow by leaps and bounds in popularity. A driving factor in Adventure Racing is the emphasis that is placed on teamwork, rather than individual achievement. Teams of 4 will attempt to navigate their way around the Ventura Harbor thru water, sand, mud and roads while working together as a team. Teams will be required to row, wheel, trek, crawl, and test their mental capabilities with some mind tingling tasks and challenges. This is a great team-building exercise with lots of bragging rights! For more information on the Adventure Race contact Michelle @ michelle@nstepevents.com.

Racers in Kinetic Vehicles will once again demonstrate their engineering ingenuity and nautical know-how beginning with the Water Launch at the Ventura Harbor Boat Ramp at 10:24 A.M. Pierpont Beach Cleanup August 22
From the City of Ventura:

The time of the Saturday, August 22 beach cleanup is now definitely 9:30-11:30. I think this is what we were all planning for, but it is now confirmed with the non-profit group, Seafoam, that will be the primary cleanup group. They expect to have about 30 volunteers here that day. We will meet at the end of Seaward. The City (me for this event) will provide trash buckets and bags, litter grabbers, gloves (latex and work), brooms, rakes, shovels, etc. We will primarily concentrate on beach trash, but we can also cleanup the street, parking lot, planter boxes and other areas at the end of Seaward. Please, let me know what kind of response you get from Pierpont residents so that I will know how many supplies to bring. Thanks for helping us turnout more volunteers! This should be a good event and a positive step toward bringing together local residents, volunteer groups and the Volunteer Ventura program on beach cleanup efforts. I look forward to seeing you on the 22nd.

LDS Helping Clean Pierpont Beach
Chris Palmieri, Public Works Supervisor with The City of Ventura, notified Scott Carlson that we'll be getting some much needed help from our Ventura neighbors. He wrote:

"I was contacted by Lee Pulsipher with the Latter Day Saints about a sand clean up project they will be conducting in Pierpont on Saturday, April 25th.  There will be approximately 250 volunteers along with a dump truck and a tractor  to clean sand from the stairs and the end of the lanes.  We will be allowing them to dump the sand at our location on Greenock.

We will be in Pierpont on April 16th to do our monthly servicing per the schedule.
The City Pierpont Sand Removal Project
sand removal by The CityHere are some photos from the Pierpont Sand removal project which took place in February.  The City removed an estimated 225 tons of sand from behind the wall and deposited it at the end of Greenock Lane. The City had a contract biologist from Padre Associates on site during the entire excavation process keeping a watchful eye for any wildlife and zoning off an area containing foliage. Per the permit, The City went out approximately 15' and down about 3' - 4'. Objective was to remove as much sand to provide relief from blowing sand, and allow safe access to beachgoers. Photos

Santa Cruz Survey
During the last PCC meeting on February 10, The Beach Committee report included information about how the University of California at Santa Cruz is conducting a survey regarding the effects that man-made structures in the California Coastal Zone have on recreation, ecology, sandy beaches and ocean waves. You are encouraged to participate in the survey through their website:

Street Sweeping Schedule
• Street sweepers generally clean the Lanes the week immediately after the regularly scheduled Sand Removal period.
• Any sand deposited in the end of the Pierpont Lanes will remain until the next scheduled “Sand Removal” day.
• City crews will respond as needed to prevent flooding from sand-clogged storm drains during rain events. However, if imminent flooding that threatens private property is observed during a storm, immediately call 652-4525 during business hours, or contact Ventura Police Dispatch at 339-4399 after hours.

For more information about the Sand Cleaning and Street Sweeping Schedule, please call the Ventura Public Works Environmental Services Office at 652-4525
